Lead Utility Coordinator - Heavy Civil (I-81 Viaduct Project)
Company Overview
A. Servidone Inc. is a lead contractor on CNY Alliance Six, the team delivering the I-81 Viaduct Project Phase 2, Contract 6 in Syracuse, New York. This is a large, active heavy civil infrastructure project with complex coordination needs across field operations, utility stakeholders, subcontractors, and project leadership. We are hiring a Utility Coordinator to lead all utility work on the contract and keep it organized, visible, and moving in step with construction.
Position Summary
This is a strong opportunity for someone who understands that utility work can directly affect schedule, field productivity, and overall project execution. In this role, you will be the project's lead for utilities: you will own utility coordination in the field, drive conflicts and relocations to closure, and make sure utility work never holds up production. You will report to project leadership and be the main point of contact for every utility owner and agency on the job.
Responsibilities
- Lead field clearance of electric, gas, telecom, water, sewer, and lighting facilities on the I-81 Viaduct Project Phase 2, Contract 6, including relocations, shutdowns, decommissioning, and protection of live facilities.
- Serve as the contractor's main point of contact with utility owners and agencies, and direct utility-related work with project management, field leadership, engineers, and subcontractors.
- Own the utility conflict log, tracking every conflict, relocation, shutdown, and open item so project leadership has clear visibility into status and upcoming risks.
- Run utility coordination meetings and manage the related correspondence, meeting minutes, and status reports.
- Plan and sequence utility-related field activities with the superintendents to prevent delays.
- Resolve utility issues by pushing utility owners, designers, and subcontractors for answers and driving each item to closure.
Utility Systems
Before crews can excavate, demolish, or build, every utility in the work area must be located, protected, relocated, or taken out of service. You will be responsible for clearing:
- Electric (National Grid): Overhead and underground lines, duct banks, manholes, vaults, transformers, and building services; de-energization, removal, circuit transfers, and line guarding near cranes and demolition.
- Natural gas (National Grid): Mains, regulator stations, valves, and services; cut-offs, cut-and-cap, purging, and abandonment.
- Telecom and fiber: Verizon, Charter/Spectrum, and private fiber carriers; cable cutovers, conduit and manholes, and pole attachment transfers.
- Lighting, signals, and ITS: City of Syracuse street lighting and traffic signals; NYSDOT highway lighting, cameras, message signs, and fiber.
- Private and railroad facilities: Hospital, university, and building steam, chilled water, power, and fiber, plus railroad utilities where work crosses rail right-of-way.
Agencies and Utility Owners
- NYSDOT: Project owner; utility work agreements, relocation plans, and Highway Work Permits.
- National Grid, Verizon, Charter/Spectrum, and fiber carriers: Outages, written clearances, relocations, and removals.
- City of Syracuse: Public Works, Water, Engineering, and Fire Departments.
- Onondaga County: Department of Water Environment Protection and Department of Transportation.
- Regulatory: Dig Safely New York (811) and the NYS Public Service Commission, NYS DEC, and NYS Department of Labor.
- Critical customers: Upstate University and Crouse hospitals, Syracuse University, and downtown businesses and residents.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who is organized, proactive, and comfortable working in a field-driven construction environment. Strong candidates will typically bring:
- 5+ years of experience in utility coordination, field engineering, or a similar role on heavy civil or DOT infrastructure projects.
- Working knowledge of utility-related field issues such as relocations, conflicts, access, shutdown planning, and coordination with outside parties.
- Working knowledge of Dig Safely New York and 16 NYCRR Part 753, OSHA excavation and power-line clearance rules, and utility outage and clearance procedures.
- The ability to stay organized, track multiple moving parts, and follow through consistently on open items.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with field teams, project leadership, subcontractors, and utility representatives.
- The confidence to lead meetings, hold utility owners and subcontractors accountable, and make decisions in the field, with the judgment to escalate issues before they affect production.
- General knowledge of heavy highway work and how a heavy civil contractor runs day to day, including earthwork, excavation and shoring, drainage, paving, bridge and structure work, demolition, maintenance and protection of traffic, quantities and daily reports, and equipment and crew planning.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience coordinating utility-related documentation, logs, and meeting follow-up
- Experience leading utility relocations or field conflict resolution on active construction projects
- NYSDOT project experience and OSHA 30 certification
- Familiarity with project scheduling, field reporting, or construction tracking tools
